Namibia

Namibia, officially the Republic of Namibia, is a country in Southern Africa. Its western border is the Atlantic Ocean but it shares land borders with Zambia, Angola, Botswana, and South Africa. It is considered to be the driest country in Sub-Saharan Africa. Being situated between the Namib and the Kalahari desert, Namibia has the least rainfall of any country in Sub-Saharan African and depends largely on groundwater.

It is the 34th largest country in the world with an area of 825,000 square kilometers. As a country, it has been inhabited since early times by the Son bushmen people, the Damara and the Nama. Around the 14th to 15th century, Bantu groups arrived as part of the Bantu expansion. The largest of these being the Ovambo, this particular group has dominated the population of the country and since the late 19th century has made up a majority.

In 1884, the German Empire established rule over most of the territory forming a colony known as German-South-West Africa. This was later mandated by the League of Nations to be administered as a colony of South Africa. Namibia obtained full independence from South Africa in 1990.
At this point, the population is approximately 2.5 million people, which makes it one of the least densely populated countries in the world.

A part of Namibia’s coastline is known as the Skeleton Coast.  This area’s name is derived from the whale and seal bones that once littered the shore as a result of the whaling industry. In modern times, the coast harvesters the skeletal remains of shipwrecks caught by offshore rocks and fog. More than a thousand such vessels of various sizes are seen along this coastline. One of the best ways to see this area is by flying it in a small aircraft.
Namibia has declared a 60,000 square kilometer park from the Ugab River to the Kunene. This is known as Skeleton Coast National Park.

There are a variety of other activities available such as visits into parts of the Namib desert and Etosha pan.

Wildlife is not as abundant as it can be in some of the other South African parks, but a combination of this beautiful stack landscape and wildlife make up for an amazing destination in southern African.
